 Nevermind What I Thought [Nessie]

Edward Cullen was as blessed as blessed could be. It was a fact that must have been written across his face every single moment of every single day. What he had ever done to deserve such astoundingly good fortune was entirely beyond him, but the fact of the matter simply remained that he was. His family was extraordinary, the patience, love, and compassion that made up the Cullens was, after all, undeniable. He had been granted a love more pure and true than anything else he had ever known the day he met Bella, and that love had given him the greatest gift imaginable in his impossibly beautiful daughter.

Five years, five, had flown by in a whirlwind of happiness for the vampire since his family had been made complete. His baby girl was not the young child everyone should have expected, but instead, an undeniable teenager to the world at large. She had changed little day by day in front of their very eyes, and now, she was a young woman with the intelligence and poise of a full grown adult. He was more of a proud father than had ever existed before, but with that pride came new, lingering concerns that he never could've anticipated when she had first entered the world.

Namely boys.

Or boy, as the case may have been. It was really just his luck that Jacob Black would have imprinted on his daughter within the first ten minutes of her life. For five years, he had watched the Quileute werewolf treat his daughter with the utmost respect and care, protecting her just as Edward had. Jacob had been patient and kind to the girl Edward treasured above all others, and though he had admittedly had more than a few murderous thoughts about the werewolf Nessie cared so much for in return, their relationship had been innocent, to say the very least.

But now her outward age matched the maturity of the girl within and Edward couldn't... no he wouldn't imagine just what kind of repercussions that could have on her relationship with the shapeshifter. No one truly knew what paranoia was until they had met Edward Cullen. Nessie had left their humble cottage over an hour ago, promising not to wander too deeply into the forest, but she hadn't returned, and Edward was immediately ready to blame the wolf. Even if he had nothing whatsoever to do with anything, in Edward's mind, it was Jacob's fault.

"Nessie?" Edward's voice called clearly into the darkness, shaking a few nearby birds from their perch and up into the air at his sound. "Nessie, where are you?" he asked, the paranoia seeping into his tone. "Renesmee Carlie Cullen, if you don't tell me where you are right now, so help me..." His voice trailed off. What would he do to her? Nothing really, the thought of punishing her for running off was nearly impossible to bear. He couldn't do such a thing to such a responsible young girl. The faint ticking of a heart met his ears and he bounded in it's direction, the figure of his daughter- thankfully alone- met his eyes. "Nessie, you can't do that to me. You were gone so long, you scared me," he admitted as he sprang to her side. "I thought..." His voice trailed off, Jacob Black's picture squarely in the middle of his thoughts, and he gritted his teeth. "Nevermind what I thought. What are you doing so far out here?"

Renesmee had had herself perched up in a tree reading one of the many eight hundred plus page books that she'd been reading since she was a little child. She was quite content to stay up in the tree and it wasn't that far away from her home in the cottage and the glass house her parents let her sleep in either as long as she told them if she was sleeping in the house.

Her life had been a whirl wind of people coming and going for the first few years but now it was just her family. They were great and she loved them dearly but sometimes she felt they were too overprotective. Nessie couldn't focus on her book her thoughts keep wandering to Jacob Black.

Jacob had been around for as long as Nessie could remember. He was her Jacob and it would crush her if he ever left or her parents made her leave him. She had found herself crushing on Jacob allot more lately but she was too frightened to tell him that since she didn't know really how much he felt that way toward her yet. She was hoping she could find someone who would tell her how much Jacob liked her.

She knew her dad worried about her liking boys well one boy, Jacob. Her dad was obviously not a big fan of the werewolf who Nessie adored. She and Jacob have had an innocent relationship not that there was much that was going to change that when her dad started to hover in the room every time Jacob was at the house as soon as Nessie started to mature.

Renesmee heard her dad and got out of the tree and then went up to him. She rolled her eyes like any typical teenager would do to their parent. She then touched his hand to let him know where she was.

I was in the tree reading dad, I guess I got a little caught up in it

Nessie showed him the book that was in her other arm she was allot further in it than she was when she left the house with it earlier

Edward's heart hadn't beaten in over a hundred years time, but that didn't stop him from thinking he certainly felt as if he had been on the verge of having a heart attack without knowing where Nessie was, or more specifically, who she was with. He let out a long, unnecessary breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding the moment she rolled her eyes at him. She had nothing to hide.

This time, anyway. How long would such good fortune last? It was only a matter of time before something furry through a wrench into his picture perfect life...

Her impossibly warm fingertips on his forehead told him all he needed to know in a vividly clear flash, as if he were watching it unfold just at that moment. There she was, perched on her own in the tree only a few yards away. The forest floor so far beneath her was empty, entirely devoid of the wolf he had feared she rendezvoused with. Once again, an unnecessary breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding escaped him in a long, low sigh.

"You know how I get when I worry," he murmured, his eyes turned down to the ground to excuse his sudden outburst of paranoia. Of course, nothing could really excuse it. This was just the most recent of many such spells he had put the young girl through. "Your mother wasn't home yet to stop me from doing something rash, like rushing out into the forest and demanding to see you," he added, his eyes lifting to her face while a smile pulled at his lips. "Please forgive me, Nessie." This time, he'd apologize, but with Jacob running around the Cullen property so often, one of these times he'd deserve the apology and when that time came...

Edward had never been so glad his mind wasn't quite as open to everyone else as theirs were to him.

"You've read that book so often, I didn't think it was possible it could still hold your interest in any way. I just thought maybe you were up to something else," he continued, trying to brush the paranoia off as if it were absolutely nothing instead of the constant it truly was. "Something you didn't want me to know about." Something involving Jacob Black...

"You've just grown up so quickly, Nessie," he continued, reaching forward to brush a stray strand of hair away from her angelic face, her eyes the perfect copy of what her mother's had once been. "Much too fast, actually, but I want you to know there's never anything you have to hide from me... ever. I'd rather just know than... stalking you into the forest at any given moment."

Nessie rolled her eyes at her overprotective father for what seemed to be the hundredth time that week alone. She liked spending time with Jacob but it wasn't like they were going to do something rash when they lived in a house full of vampires. Some cuddling on the couch watching a movie, or they'd be sitting on the floor playing a game. They weren't about to do something rash when her dad could read their thoughts.

Renesmee did want to date the big burly werewolf that she so adored. She loved Jacob and it wasn't just loved him like her brother or best friend anymore even though he'd still be all of those things for her. She sometimes wished that she could have a younger sibling take some of the attention off of her every once in a while.

Renesmee rolled her eyes when her dad let out an unnecessary breath. Her mom trusted her with Jacob why couldn't he turst her. She was acting like the fifteen year old she was but she couldn't help it her dad was being irrational about Jacob all together.

"I know daddy, mommy said it was worse when she was human" said Nessie quietly

Nessie didn't get it why was her dad being so irrational now it wasn't like she was all that fragile. Nessie always forgave her dad simply because mom said to brush it off as him being a dad with a teenage daughter. Nessie was sick of the paranoia that he seemed to suffer with her.

She loved her nickname since it was one that Jacob gave her and it kind of just stuck. Of course her mom had to make up her own name for her so Renesmee would never share a name with anyone else ever. At least if she told people Nessie they could assume it was short for something like Vanessa until it came to a form.

Renesmee rolled her eyes again when her dad thought she was lying to him. She wasn't really lying she had been reading the book for a good long while and then kind of spaced out but that was nothing all that important for him to know.

"Daddy I love this book, Seth used to read it to me at night when I couldn't sleep" said Nessie quietly like she usually was when she spoke out loud

Nessie knew most of those nights that she couldn't sleep when she was little was because Jacob wasn't lurking right outside of her window. She actually still often times fell asleep on the couch with Jacob when they were watching a movie because she felt safe in his arms.

She knew her dad had no problem with Seth hanging around the house or Leah even though Nessie wasn't a big fan of Leah herself since she seemed to cause trouble for Jacob quite a bit. Nessie looked at her dad he was trying to give her the conversation her mom had given her already. She touched his forehead to let him know that she already got it from mom.

She didn't mind the cold that radiated off of her family and the warmth that came from Jacob and Seth was always welcome. There wasn't much temperature difference between her and the werewolves.

It was difficult if not impossible not to let a quiet growl escape Edward's lips. Nessie was thinking about Jacob far too much and the only thing that was worse than that was the fact that he knew the annoying mutt thought of his precious Nessie just as much, if not more. The thought was debilitating, like a shot through his silent heart. He didn't know if human fathers were more fortunate to have the blessing of extra years before their daughters aged, or if it would only prolong the inevitable pain.

Of course, human fathers would have a much more difficult time tearing their daughter's suitors limb from limb.

A slight chuckle escaped the vampire at his daughter's innocent, yet honest words. "Believe it or not, it was worse then," he admitted, recalling with perfect clarity the days on end that were devoted to nothing but worry over the human girl he had given his silent heart so completely to. "Your aunts and uncles thought I was insane. I'm sure they would've had me committed if they could have." Maybe Nessie would accept his own constant hovering and interference if she thought it could be a lot worse than what it was...

Looking at the book Nessie held, the binding, once new and immaculate was worn with use, it's spine showing the signs of wear it had incurred with such frequent use. He couldn't help but smile. The amount of time Nessie had needed others to read to her was unfathomable. She was beyond brilliant, more intelligent than adults with ten times her education, but she was still most fond of the books that held some kind of meaning to her, even if it was so simple as the one of the youngest werewolves in the Quileute tribe read it to her when she was still so new to the world. "You get that from your mother, definitely not from me," he murmured softly. "She'll read the same book a hundred times over if given half the chance."

No matter how light he tried to make the conversation, there was no denying what had truly lead him out into the forest after her. Nessie knew that, a fact that was confirmed the moment her warm fingers reached forward and touched his forehead once more. Instantly, a replay of a discussion between her and Bella began playing in front of his eyes, and the vampire couldn't help but smile. There was nothing so beautiful to him as the two women he loved most dearly.

"Your mother went too easy on you," he stated before seating himself atop a new boulder that Emmett had yet to smash in a show of strength that failed to impress anyone any longer. "Don't think I don't trust you, Nessie, because I do. You're intelligent, responsible, well-behaved, well-mannered... a father couldn't ask for more and I certainly couldn't deserve anything more wonderful. I have complete unwavering faith in you, it's Jacob I don't trust."

And really, why should he? Sure, Jacob had granted him permission to turn Bella when there were no other alternatives and yes, because of him, the treaty between the Cullens and the Quileutes was never stronger, nor more open. But Jacob always was and always would be the same wolf that had tried repeatedly to steal Bella's heart away from him. That wasn't an issue any longer, but what did he want to do if not steal Nessie's eternally beating heart?

"You really like him, don't you?" he asked with the breath of a panged sigh in his voice. The truth seemed obvious enough already. She had adored him from the day she was born. He had always been "her Jacob." Nothing, however, could keep Edward from wishing their imprinting would never reach the state of love and affection. "How much do you like him?"

Nessie was having a hard time not thinking about Jacob lately. She knew it frustrated her father that she adored the shapeshifter. Renesmee couldn't help it she adored him and had since she was little but she sometimes wondered if he saw her the way she saw him. Renesmee was getting worried that her dad was going to tear her Jacob to shreds.

Nessie laughed slightly when he said that her aunts and uncles thought he'd lost his mind. She sometimes wondered about that. She honestly wasn't sure how much worse it would get with her dad hovering over her all the time.

"Can it get much worse" said Nessie

Renesmee enjoyed the book many times over which was obviously something that her mother had given to her. Her dad seemed to read a book once put it on the shelf and never pick it up again if he had a choice in the matter. Her mom would read a book several times overs before it would be put to rest on a shelf.

"I've never seen you read a book more than once" said Nessie "So definitely a mom trait"

Nessie looked at him when he said it was Jacob he didn't trust. Nessie had adored him from the time she was born he was always her Jacob. Nessie nodded when Edward asked her is she liked Jacob.

"Allot" said Nessie.

"Oh, you'd be surprised," Edward stated with almost a laugh at the idea that his concern could indeed get worse, but it certainly could. The things he loved and cared for, he loved and cared for fiercely, and he wasn't willing to stand by and let anything happen to those precious few things. He was protective, and he was often unreasonable in that protection, but if it kept those he loved safe, he never regretted a moment of it.

"I'm sure many of the family could offer you stories of when I was, perhaps, a tad bit on the side of unreasonable," he continued with a soft smile playing across his lips. "But don't even consider trying to rally them behind you now. I don't think anyone would call me crazy for my concern over you." Everyone Nessie had ever met had loved her unconditionally, it was impossible not to, but with a family composed nearly entirely of vampires, there wasn't going to be much thrill over her having a flea-infested boyfriend.

A lot.

Such simple, brief words cut through Edward far more effectively than a knife ever could have. His hard hands gripped the boulder he sat upon so hard, it threatened to crack beneath the ungodly pressure. His eyes slipped closed, his worst fears so obviously confirmed aloud. There was no denying them now.

Every memory of every game Jacob had ever played in his desperate attempts to woo Bella away from him flooded back as he opened his eyes once more and looked into his daughter's breathtakingly perfect face. This had to be the way Charlie had felt the moment Bella had introduced the two of them formally. The vampire was, momentarily, overcome with a desire to seek out his father-in-law and beg him for the unspeakable torture he had unknowingly put the human man through.

But he choked it back, for now. Apologizing to Charlie could wait, his concern for Nessie was impossible to delay. Lifting his cold hand, he brushed Nessie's cheek ever so gently. "You have your mother's eyes," he stated, and to his daughter, it probably seemed an entirely random comment to make, but to Edward at that moment, it meant everything. "I know I've told you that before, but it's true. Your eyes are exact duplicates of what your mother's once were." Jacob did not deserve to play the same games he had when first looking into those familiar eyes...

"Imprinting," he scoffed, more to himself than to Nessie. Jacob hadn't looked at Bella the way he once had from the day Nessie had been born on. He had been a great help in the five years since then, but nothing could undo what had already been done, and everything Jacob had put Edward through already. The idea that Nessie could be hurt in any way by Jacob was just inexcusable.

"You are such a treasure, Nessie," he continued, a smile replacing the soured expression his face had taken on during his thoughts. "To more than just me and your mother. You are a rare treasure to the whole world. Something unexpected, beautiful, and rare. You are an extraordinary gift who has grown up in front of my very eyes much too quickly. But you don't have to be in a hurry to truly grow up, you know. You have eternity ahead of you. An eternity in which you can make your own decisions. You can see the world, you can learn everything your heart desires. You can embrace every opportunity this life has offered you. There's no rush for you. You don't need to yet burden yourself with... complications."

A complication. That was possibly the nicest thing going through Edward's head as to what Jacob Black was. His generosity surprised even him.

"Daddy, Aunt Alice already told me it could get allot worse that you bought her a yellow porsche to watch over mom" said Nessie

The idea that her dad's overprotectiveness was a trait that was going to follow him for the rest of eternity. She didn't think her dad needed to be that over protective of her. She tucked her hair behind her ear.

Nessie was fairly well aware of the fact that she couldn't get her family to rally behind her on the matter. They were all really over protective of her. None of them were all that fond of Jacob, Rosalie especially didn't like him but Nessie adored him.

She watched as her dad started to crack the boulder he was sitting on. She knew he was mad about Jacob, but Nessie couldn't help it she adored Jacob and her family was just going to have to get used to it and she hoped they would.

Nessie knew that her grandpa had probably felt the same way when her dad started dating her mom. She knew her dad was concerned with her safety. She let her dad just be her dad right now.

Nessie had heard that from her dad several times before. She had only see her mom when she was human in pictures. She looked at her dad who she knew he was thinking about everything. Nessie and Jacob had been just about as inseperable as they came after she was born. She and Jacob were almost always together. They had shared naps on the couch in front of the tv. He'd been around when her dad thought it was a good idea for her to learn how to swim. He was there for every big moment in his life.

"I don't want to grow up to fast " said Nessie "I just like Jacob allot"

Nessie adored Jacob more than anyone knew and that was something that wasn't going to change anytime soon.

Edward couldn't help but chuckle slightly as Nessie reminded him of the extravagant purchase he had made for his sister in order for her help in keeping Bella both safe and away from harm. "Your Aunt Alice shouldn't have told you about that," he stated after a moment as he tried to fight his smile of amusement in order to maintain an entirely serious expression. "And really, she didn't even fully deserve it. She didn't entirely keep up her end of our bargain, but you have to see, I was willing to do such a thing because I wanted nothing more than to keep your mother safe and away from harm. I want the same things for you. Yes, I may be a little... extreme in my concern, but every time I have been, there has been plenty of reason to be."

Sighing slightly, the vampire examined his daughter's beautiful, young face. He didn't deserve such a beautiful daughter, but if he didn't, there was no way Jacob did either. The overgrown mutt would take care of her, he couldn't deny that, but she could have anyone in the entire world, he was sure of it. Why did imprinting have to limit her as it limited the wolves?

He felt the boulder giving away beneath him as his grasp of it tightened. He could feel tiny grains of the rock forming beneath his fingers as he threatened to turn the entire thing to sand. Emmett would be upset he had wasted a perfectly good boulder over the likes of Jacob Black...

"Liking Jacob a lot is growing up too fast," Edward sighed, his eyes shifting from Nessie's gaze to the emptiness of the forest around him. "Much, much too fast as a matter of fact. I know your feelings for him are... altering," he continued, a low growl escaping him at the mere thought of it, "but you have all the time in the world, and then some. I don't want to see you hurt by these... feelings you have for him." He merely shuddered at the thought. "You wouldn't be the first he hurt."

Nessie giggled slightly when her dad said that Alice didn't keep up her end of the bargain. She didn't know why Aunt Alice didn't keep up her end of the bargain or why she shouldn't have asked her that.

"Why wasn't Aunt Alice supposed to tell me that" asked Nessie

Nessie saw her dad's amused smile and how he was trying to hide it from her. She held back a giggle when her dad said he was a little extreme in his concern.

"More than a little extreme daddy, you are extremely extreme in your concern daddy" said Nessie "Buying Aunt Alice a porsche is a little over the line of a little extreme daddy"

Nessie started to play with a strand of her hair, it was a habit that she'd gotten into when she was younger and just never stopped. Nessie really wasn't interested in allot of other guys especially the ones Aunt Alice introduced her to. They weren't sweet like Jacob was. Plus none of them would understand her ability like Jacob would. Nessie felt good having Jacob around being with him even if it was just to sit on the Couch in her house was really nice.

Her already quickly beating heart always got faster when Jacob would smile at her or something like that. Nessie looked at her dad as he started to break the boulder.

"Why is that growing up too fast he's been my best friend for as long as I can remember"
said Nessie "Why would I be hurt by him he'd never hurt me"

Nessie looked at her dad with a curious look about what he said about Jacob hurt someone before.

"Who else did he hurt" said Nessie
